Australia Day - 2025 - Yinnar
Australia Day celebrations in Yinnar started well with a beautiful sunny morning. The attendance was better than expected given that the day had fallen on a long weekend. Great food was provided by the Yinnar & District Lions Club. Ex Kurnai student Lucas Hobbs provided the entertainment with his rendition of several well known hits.
Yinnar and District Community Association president, Luke Townsend, chaired proceedings for the morning. Our local member Danny O’Brien, together with Councillors Darren Howe and Leanne Potter gave short addresses to the crowd.
The Australian flag was then raised by a great contingency of the 1st Yinnar Scout group, followed by the singing of the national anthem by attendees.
Three of the Yinnar Primary School Captains, Annie Bremner, Jayden Bond and Adelaide Cleaver, presented their rendition of “What is Australia Day?” Each of the Captains spoke brilliantly.
The Australia Day Citizen of the Year awards were then presented. Unfortunately, there were no nominations for Young Citizen of the Year. Luke suggested that next year the mission of the town should be to correct this oversight and provide nominations.
There were two nominations for Citizen of the Year, Laura Gee and Kevin Young. The award was won by Kevin for his outstanding community work especially the establishment and upkeep of the RV stop over in Yinnar which has brought lots of new faces to the town.
The morning culminated in the presentation of a life long achievement award to Herb Smith.
A fantastic day appreciated by all who attended – well done everybody.
