Northways History

Rob de Souza-Daw – Ruth Version

The Northways were Pioneers of Hazelwood. The Morwell Historical Society is presenting The Pioneering Northway Family Exhibition at the Society’s building at 12 Hazelwood Road. The Exhibition features many photos, documents and maps of the three pioneering generations. The exhibition is a graphic display following the Northway family from their immigration from England in 1848 to their lives at Hazelwood.

William and Mary Northway’s two sons and wives were also pioneers of Hazelwood. They were Thomas Full Northway and William Northway Jnr. Northways Road in Churchill was named after the family of Thomas Full Northway. He trained in Adelaide as a wheelwright and worked as a wheelwright in Adelaide and Sale before selecting land and becoming a farmer at Hazelwood.

William Full Northway and William Northway Jnr selected land around the junction of Tramway Road and Boldings Road. This intersection became known as Northways Corner and they farmed in partnership as W and W Northway.

The Exhibition has many 100 year old photos and documents and is open to the public from Wednesday 21 October 2026 from 11am to 2pm. Thereafter, the exhibition will be open during these times on Sunday 25 October, Wednesday 4 and 18 November and finally 29 November 2026. For any enquiries, please contact David McInnes 0400 809 376.
