Friends of Morwell National Park - July 2026
The group met with seven other community members in the picnic area and were welcomed by Caitilin. High above in the tree tops a koala was spotted in a little pocket of sunlight. Caitilin thanked everyone who helped make our 40th anniversary celebration such a success. Several of our guests commented on what a lovely afternoon it was. There was a suggestion that as part of our 40th anniversary celebrations we should plant 40 trees in the park (most likely in the vacant area near the junction of Weir and But But Tracks, close to the first bridge across Billys Creek). We will put forward a proposal for the planting of 40 trees to Parks Victoria. If approved, we will complete the planting in a future activity from seedlings that Peter currently has. A mix of local plants would be planted.
The day’s activity was a fungi and lichen walk around Fosters Gully. Multiple groups walked at different paces around Fosters Gully. Some enjoyed the opportunity to walk and warm up on the cold morning while others carefully searched beside the track to discover the little gems to be found. A wide variety of lichens and fungi were unearthed. A huge thanks goes to Mike for sharing and identifying his photos from the day.
As the first group completed the full circuit of Fosters Gully, another group had returned from Lynton’s Landing. The first group spotted four koalas during their walk. Lunch was had by each group as they returned to the picnic area.
After lunch each group returned home, and the timing was good since while being dry during the walks it rained soon after, later that afternoon.
