Lions - October 2024
Things have been a little quiet for the Lions Club of Churchill during the winter months, which is probably a good thing, as during this time the Club has a number of members who depart to enjoy the warmer climate up north.
Unfortunately, the Club has had to move from the Churchill Hotel where it has held its meetings for many, many years. The Club will now be meeting at the Churchill Golf Club. Our first meeting was held at the Golf Club recently where we welcomed two new members, Fiona Lane and Peter Lucas. Lion President Robin King inducted Fiona and Peter during the meeting.
The Club is in the process of setting up our own Web page, stay tuned.
Even though it has been quiet, the Club has still been out in the community doing a Bunnings BBQ, also assisting Bunnings with their Community Father’s Day event. We were on the BBQ at the recent Churchill market day, were handing out sausages at the Uplift Youth event at Mid Valley Morwell run by Latrobe Health, assisting young people to connect to youth services in an informative, fun way. The Club also assisted Morwell East at the football finals.
With a very busy period coming up for the Club leading up to Christmas, we will be at the upcoming Traralgon race meetings, assisting in the carpark at the Traralgon Home and Leisure Show, and doing Bunnings BBQs. An important event for the Club is the visit by the District Governor in October, and for the community is the Lions Skin Check van, which will be in Churchill on December 3 and 4.
The Club will also be running the Churchill Community Family Fishing and Fun Day again this year on Saturday November 23, which promises to be another great day out fishing at Lake Hyland Mathison Park. It is fun for the whole family with great prizes to be won by children who are registered on the day. Children and the whole family also get the opportunity to learn about fishing, fishing regulations and caring about our waterways from experts from Fisheries Victoria and Fish Care Victoria. The cost to register for the Fishing and Fun day remains at a low cost of $2 per child or $5 per family, with every child who registers receiving a free sausage and a drink.
Australia Day 2025 Nominations are now open for Senior Citizen of the year, Young Citizen of the year and School Student Citizen of the year.
We all know of people in our community who do some extraordinary things in our community, in areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary service, business, sports, arts, the environment, or any other area, such as those helping others in our community doing it tough, the elderly, the sick or those helping young people to find their way, people who contribute to the advancement and well-being of our community over a number of years.
If you know someone in your community who has made that extraordinary outstanding contribution and community service to the Churchill and district community, why not nominate them for an Australia Day Award.
The application form is elsewhere in this edition, all applications must have a supporting referee.
What does being a Lion mean, what Lions do in our community, how being a Lion can be rewarding. Being a Lion, you can make a difference not only in the local community but throughout the world. Being a Lion can be fun and rewarding, it is social, you meet new people and you get the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, and assist people and the community where it is most needed.
If you are interested in joining a community minded Service Club, we are here waiting for you to contact us. For a chat, call our Secretary Peter Tait on 0421 167 915, and organise to come along to one of our meetings, meet our members and see what we are about, but more importantly hear about what we do and how we do it.
You do not have to be elderly to be a Lion, we want and need younger members, you do not need to give a lot of your time, you just want to give back a little to the community you live in, your community.
